About
Blue Barry & Pancakes: Beach Ball Bedlam is a heart-warming, funny and fun graphic novel for children ages 5-8 years old. It’s 90-pages long and full colour.
It is an adventure story about three best friends whose search for a beach ball leads them on a wild and fantastical journey, full of entertaining characters and zany situations such as the inside of a whale, tuba-playing sailors, an alien pool party and a flying pig!
The story is fast paced, using colourful panels in varying sizes, bold and simple speech that makes it accessible and plenty of onomatopoeia to emphasise the action. The look and feel of the book captivate young readers and draws them into a vibrant madcap world.
Authors and Illustrators Dan Abdo and Jason Patterson have worked hard to create three charming characters in Blue, Barry & Pancakes. Each character stands out and has their own individual personality; Blue is a bookworm; Barry is a gifted inventor, and a Pancakes is a larger-than-life rabbit. Their individuality and differences are what really makes the book special. Throughout this comic adventure (and throughout the Blue, Barry & Pancakes series) the characters learn how to cooperate and understand each other, tolerate and love their differences. It’s a simple but important message about friendship which speaks to its target audience of 5-8 years old who are themselves learning how friendships work.
